The basis of Clinixian is a non conventional approach to systems architecture. This is called archetype or two level modelling. The approach underlying Clinixian is to separate the clinical knowledge from the application code.

This ability to encapsulate expert knowledge allows owners of the solution to maintain this knowledge as their intellectual property and in fact to be able to onsell this IP to other clients.

Problem with conventional approach

The conventional approach to systems development is to define the clinical requirements and have an IT professional interpret them and design a database and system to record, access and report on the data. Once the specification has been agreed the IT professionals have to interpret the specification and write computer code that basically encapsulates all these requirements for data, clinical rules and the reports.

The problem with this approach is to educate the IT professional in the clinical terminology and clinical practices. A further difficulty is to accurately specify these requirements and the subsequent cost of writing computer code that effectively reflects them. The problem is magnified with clinical requirements which tend to change over time. This makes it nearly impossible for a conventional system to keep up-to-date and is time consuming and expensive.

Clinixian approach

Clinixian eliminates these problems in a number of ways. There are two major components, a modeller and an application browser as per the diagram below:

The modeller allows expert users, such as clinicians, to define the data terminology, associated rules and reports. The modeller records all this knowledge in a database called the subject model. This subject model is easily maintained by one or more representative of the application user. Clinixian also has the added advantage of providing online access capabilities with full system functionality, if required, to all validated users.

The application browser reads the subject model which determines the behaviour of the application. The application computer code is subject matter free because all the clinical knowledge is embedded in the model. This means that any changes in requirements only involve changes in the model and avoid having to enhance or modify the application. This approach considerably reduces the cost of keeping the subject application inline with changes in clinical practice and terminology.
